Program Overview
Below you'll find the goals and objectives for each program year.
PGY-1: Intern
- 5 months of neurosurgery
 - 3 months of neuro-ICU
 - 1 month of neuroradiology
 - 1 month of neuropathology
 - 1 month of neuroanesthesia
 - 1 month of plastic surgery
 - Attend the Society of Neurological Surgeons Intern Boot Camp
 
PGY-2
- Clinical neurosurgery service
 - Day float/night float coverage – consult/service pager call
 - Operative experience during non-pager blocks
 
PGY-3
- Clinical neurosurgery service
 - Major operative cases during junior year
 
PGY-4 & PGY-5
- Basic science or clinical research years; residents may work in neurosurgery laboratories or collaborate with Columbia laboratories outside the department
 - 6-month clinical elective at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London
 - Clinic one day per month
 - Attend the Society of Neurological Surgeons RUNN Course
 - Clinical responsibilities are limited to senior night calls and senior operative coverage
 - Thrombectomy call divided among PGY-4 and PGY-5 residents and INR fellow
 
PGY-6
- Clinical service chief – exclusively operative experience
 
PGY-7: Chief
- Administrative and clinical service chief – exclusively operative experience
