Congratulations to Dr. Kate Carroll: NYP Columbia/Cornell Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery's New Fellow for 2025

Building the Next Generation in Pediatric Neurosurgery

November 19, 2024

New York-Presbyterian's Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery, with Columbia and Cornell, proudly congratulates Kate Carroll, who just matched our program for the 2025 pediatric fellowship training program. Under this program, Kate will train under the mentorship of Dr. Caitlin Hoffman, Dr. Neil Feldstein and the rest of our faculty and team. Dr. Carroll will receive comprehensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric neurosurgical disorders with training in neuro-endoscopy, neuro-oncology (with additional rotation at Memorial Sloan Kettering), craniofacial, epilepsy, vascular, complex craniocervical, and spine surgery techniques.

Kate grew up in the Bay Area and moved east to attend Princeton University. Following graduation, she stayed in New Jersey for another four years, working at Integra Life Sciences. Then, Kate moved back to California to attend medical school at the University of California, San Diego. Following UCSD, she traveled up the coast to the University of Washington for residency.

As to what interested her in neurosurgery, Kate says, "My first exposure to the medical field was working at Integra. I rotated through the Clinical Affairs department and was sent to CNS to administer a survey on surgeon preferences for dural reconstruction. I snuck in some lectures during my downtime and, already interested in the subject matter from my undergraduate experience in neuroscience, realized that I wanted to be the one using the devices I was helping study."

On what made NYP's pediatric neurosurgery her perfect match, Kate shares, "I feel very fortunate to have had great exposure to pediatric neurosurgery in residency through Seattle Children's Hospital and was drawn to the similar camaraderie amongst the faculty and commitment to mentorship here. I'm looking forward to joining the team, learning from experts in their respective fields, and seeing the practice of pediatric neurosurgery across multiple additional sites."

Dr. Caitlin Hoffman shares, “The bi-campus nature of our fellowship offers a truly unique surgical, clinical, and academic experience, and we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Caroll into the NYPH pediatric neurosurgery family for an incredibly rich and fulfilling year of reciprocal learning from each other.”

Dr. Neil Feldstein also commented, "We had an exceptionally strong group of candidates this year and we are very excited to have matched the first choice and a consensus of our entire division."

NewYork-Presbyterian is the largest regional pediatric neurosurgery service provider in the tristate area. Ranked among the top 5 hospitals in the nation and boasting New York's number one children's hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian offers an incomparable training experience across a full range of conditions, including brain and spinal cord tumors, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, vascular disorders, Chiari malformation and syringomyelia, spina bifida, and spasticity.
