Dr. Raymond Sekula Featured at China's World Federation of Cranial Nerve Disorders Congress

A Growing Global Focus for Cranial Nerve Disorders and Treatments

January 6, 2025

Last month, Dr. Raymond Sekula traveled to Shanghai, China, for the 4th Annual World Neurosurgeon Federation of Cranial Nerve Disorders Congress. Top minimally invasive brain surgeons, like Dr. Sekula, continue to refine and develop new treatments for cranial nerve hyperexcitability disorders - such as trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia as well as difficult to reach skull base tumors. The group of experts continues to share best practices and educate more neurologists and neurosurgeons. Guests from 15 countries participated in the Congress.

According to the WNFCND website, this meeting "is an international academic society concerning cranial nerve dysfunctions, especially those benefitting from treatment with microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery.” In 2017, Professors Sekula, LI Shi Ting, and Jun Zhong convened the first international congress of experts. The group has grown dramatically in the past seven years. This international federation gathers the most world-renowned experts in the field, and Dr. Sekula currently serves as President of the WFNS for Cranial Nerve Disorders.

Dr. Sekula gave a talk entitled "The Role of Transposition Versus Interposition in Microvascular Decompression Surgery for Hemifacial Spasm and Trigeminal Neuralgia" and promoted the launch of his team’s new book, Microvascular Decompression Surgery: Advances and Expansion of Strategy and Techniques with co-editors Shi-Ting Li, Jun Zhong, and Marc SINDOU.

Sharing his thoughts on how cranial nerve and skull base surgeries are beginning to gain more focus in the field and what the future may hold, Dr. Sekula remarked, “the group serves a variety of purposes. First, we have been able to share and encourage best practices amongst each other. Additionally, we are teaching the next generations of surgeons internationally.”
