Evan F Joiner, MD

Evan F. Joiner, MD, is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon and Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He specializes in the treatment of complex disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including degenerative spine disease, spinal deformity, spinal tumors, cervical myelopathy, and conditions requiring revision surgery or advanced spinal reconstruction. His surgical expertise includes minimally invasive techniques as well as complex adult and pediatric spinal deformity surgery.Dr. Joiner completed his medical degree at Columbia University, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, followed by neurological surgery residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. During residency, he completed an enfolded spine fellowship with Dean Chou, MD, and was recognized with the Rising Star Award from the Columbia University Academy of Clinical Excellence. He subsequently completed the Lawrence G. Lenke Fellowship in Adult and Pediatric Spinal Deformity through Columbia Orthopedic Spine Surgery, gaining additional advanced training in complex spinal deformity and reconstruction.In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Joiner serves as Research Director of the Columbia Center for Spinal Neuromodulation and Recovery. His research focuses on developing new approaches to restore neurological function after spinal cord injury and other disorders affecting the spinal cord. He has a particular interest in spinal cord stimulation, neuromodulation, and neural plasticity and is investigating how these approaches may improve recovery in patients with spinal cord injury and cervical myelopathy.Dr. Joiner's research has received support from the National Institutes of Health, the Columbia University Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, and the New York State Spinal Cord Injury Research Board. His work has also been recognized nationally with the Fessler Award and Kuntz Scholar Award from the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves.By combining advanced spine surgery with research focused on neurological recovery, Dr. Joiner aims to provide individualized treatment for patients with complex spinal conditions while helping develop new strategies to preserve and restore function.
