December 2, 2025

On Saturday, November 1, 2025, Columbia Neurosurgery participated in the Second Annual Neurofibromatosis (NF) Patient Symposium, held from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center (104 Haven Avenue, New York, NY 10032). The event brought together patients, families, clinicians, and researchers for a day focused on education, connection, and empowerment for those affected by neurofibromatosis.

Dr. Raymond Sekula, Director of Cranial Nerve and Brainstem Disorders Center, presented on NF2-related schwannomatosis, a condition in which patients develop multiple benign tumors, often on the hearing and balance nerves, that can affect hearing, facial movement, and overall quality of life. Dr. Sekula highlighted a team-based approach to NF2 care, developed in collaboration with Dr. Justin Golub (Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery), emphasizing coordinated surgical planning, hearing preservation strategies, and long-term patient support.

Dr. Christopher Winfree, Director of Neurosurgical Pain Management, shared insights on the evaluation and treatment of peripheral nerve sheath tumors, which arise from the protective lining of peripheral nerves. His presentation focused on advanced microsurgical techniques that enable precise tumor removal while preserving nerve function—an essential goal for maintaining patient mobility and comfort.

The symposium underscored the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in NF care, bringing together specialists in neurosurgery, otolaryngology, neuro-oncology, genetics, rehabilitation, and patient support services. Through these efforts, Columbia continues to advance comprehensive, compassionate care for patients living with neurofibromatosis.
